Reading (Advance Class)

People who stay in education  for longer appear to have better ability to compensate for the effects of dementia on the brain, a study suggests. A UK and Finnish team found those with more education whereas likely to show the signs of dementia in their brains at death as those with less. But they were less likely to have displayed symptoms during their lifetime, the study in brain said,  Experts said scientists now had to find out why the effects occurred.

Over the past decade, studies on dementia have consistently shown that the more time someone spends in education, the lower the risk of dementia will be. But studies have been unable to show whether or not education-which is linked to higher  socio-economic status and healthier lifestyle-protects the brain against dementia.

The researchers in this study examined the brains of 872 people who had been part of three large ageing studies. Before their deaths they had also completed questionnaires about their education. The researchers found that more education makes people better able to cope with changes in the brain associated with dementia. It is showed that, for each year spent in education, there was an 11% decreased risk of developing dementia.

In addition, the researchers used data from the eclipse collaborations which combines the Europian population-based longitudinal studies of ageing from the UK and Finland which have assessed people for up to 20 years. This is the largest study ever to confirm that hitting the books could help people fight the symptoms of dementia in later life. What is not known is why a longer education is so good for people. Another reason could be that education  people find ways of managing or hiding their symptoms. What is needed now is more research to find out why education can make the brain more ‘dementia resistant’.

Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said: “During dementia, protein build up in the brain and nerve cells become damaged. This research suggest that education is not able to stop the damage but enables the brain  to cope better and alleviate its impact.”

Reading (My Town)

My town

My Town – Newquay

by Alex Howarth, 14

I live in Newquay. It’s a small town on the Atlantic coast in the south of England. It has got great beaches and is the best place to surf in the UK. There are lots of surf schools where you can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends every weekend. My favourite place is Fistral Beach.

I love Newquay because there are lots of other things to do as well as surfing. If you like water sports, you can go kayaking, water-skiing or coasteering. Coasteering is different because it is rock climbing, jumping into the sea and swimming in the same activity, but you should always go with a special instructor.

If you like animals you can also visit the Blue Reef Aquarium and see lots of different fish and even sharks. You can also go horse riding on the beach or visit Newquay Zoo. There are lots of other attractions too like mini golf and bowling. Come and see for yourself!

Narrative Text

Queen of Arabia and Three Sheiks

Maura, who like to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had many suitors. One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks. The three sheiks were all equally young and handsome. They were also rich and strong. It was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.

One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of the three sheiks. As they were about to have dinner, Maura asked them for something to eat. The first gave her some left over food. The second Sheik gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail. The third sheik, who was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After dinner, the disguised queen left the sheik’s camp.

The following day, the queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her servant to give each one exactly what they had given her the evening before. Hakim, who received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two sheiks could not share it with him.

This Sheik Hakim’s act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her. “Without question, Hakim is the most generous of you” she announced her choice to the sheiks. “So it is Hakim I will marry”.

Lyric to Listen !

 I don't know why

You think that you could (1)............. me
When you couldn't get by
By yourself
And I don't know (2)................ would ever want to tear the seam
Of someone's dream

Baby, it's fine,
You said that we should just be (3)..............
Well, I came up with that line
And I'm sure that it's for the best
If you ever (4).............. your mind,
Don't hold your breath

'Cause you may not believe,
That, baby, I'm relieved,
When you said goodbye,
My whole world (5)...............

It's a beautiful day and I can't stop (6)...........from smiling
If we're drinking, then I'm buying
And I know there's no denying

It's a beautiful day, the sun is up, the music's (7).................
And even if it started raining
You won't hear this (8).......... complaining
'Cause I'm glad that you're the one who got away
It's a beautiful day

It's my turn to fly,
So, girls, get in (9)................
'Cause I'm easy, no playing this guy like a fool
Now I'm alright
Might've had me caged before, but not tonight

And you may not believe,
That, baby, I'm relieved
This fire inside: it burns too bright
I don't wanna say "so long",
I just wanna to say "(10).............."

It's a beautiful day and I can't stop (11)........... from smiling
If we're drinking, then I'm buying
And I know there's no denying

That it's a beautiful day, the sun is up, and the music's (12)..............
And even if it started raining
You won't hear this boy complaining
'Cause I'm glad that you're the one who got away,

'Cause if you ever think I'll take up
My time with thinking of our break-up
Then you've got another thing coming your way
'Cause it's a beautiful day,

Beautiful day,
Oh, baby, any day
That you're gone away
It's a beautiful day
